Dark Night by Christine Fonseca, a short-story, truly frustrated me – if I'm being honest. I realize it was a short piece but I wanted more. Tristan and his sisters are seers who live on an island where they are protected from evil. However, not all of his siblings want to be there. Some time prior to the telling of this little tale Tristan's sister Lorelei had moved to NYC, possibly not the safest place for someone who is supposed to be protected from evil at all costs.
Tristan's other sister, Ellie, has what one might refer to as cabin fever and wants to go in search of her sister. She leaves the island without telling Tristan, though he knows right where to look for her. So, there he goes on his own quest to NYC. On the train ride there, Tristan runs into Nikki, but also sees the beast (aka the devil). Again inside a bakery where he has taken cover from seeing the beast again on the street, he runs into Nikki.
That night they go to a night club. While there someone dies and Tristan almost joins them in death if not for the white angel who rescues him and takes him to his sister Ellie, who is waiting at Lorelei's apartment. They are told they'll see Nikki when the time is right. They take care of some family business and prepare for the battle that lay ahead.
If I were promised this was going to turn into a book I'd say great because it is definitely well written! However, even as a short story there is too much missing information for the heart of the story to really hit home for me. It is safe to say I was not fond of this story. I want to know what seers do. I want to know why the devil is after them. I want more and I just didn't get it with this one. Sorry.
